GFCI Outlet Keeps Tripping? We Fix It Fast

A Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) is one of the most important safety devices in your home. Introduced in the late 1960's, GFCIs were created in response to the high number of shocks and electrocutions occurring in residential settings. These devices were designed to instantly cut power when they detect a dangerous imbalance in electrical current, significantly reducing the risk of serious injury or death.

Since their introduction, GFCI protection has become one of the most important life-saving advancements in electrical safety.

GFCI Weatherproof Cover

Proper Outdoor GFCI Installation

This is what a correctly installed outdoor GFCI should look like. The outlet sits flush in the box, and the weatherproof in-use cover closes completely even with the cord running through it. If the cover cannot fully close, it is no longer weatherproof while in use, which will eventually cause the GFCI to fail.

Outdoor outlets are also required to be weather-resistant to meet current electrical code. Unfortunately, many installers fail to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and skip applying silicone at top of where the cover meets the box. This allows rainwater to enter the box and will ruin the outlet.

GFCI Replacement

When a GFCI Needs to Be Replaced

Nothing lasts forever, including GFCI outlets. Even though many newer GFCI devices now feature self-testing technology, manufacturers still recommend testing them monthly by pressing the "Test" and "Reset" buttons.

The most dangerous type of failure happens when a GFCI stops providing protection but continues to deliver power. In these cases, the outlet appears to be working normally, leaving you and your family unprotected without any warning.

In the photo above, you can see an old, faulty GFCI that was no longer protecting the circuit next to the new unit we installed.

GFCI Keeps Tripping

Why Your GFCI Keeps Tripping

One of the most common service requests we get is that a GFCI outlet keeps tripping or won’t reset. In this photo, our electrician is replacing a GFCI that was requiring frequent resets to restore power. Repetitive tripping is your GFCI telling you that something is wrong and needs to be corrected.

GFCIs are very sensitive and will trip when they detect even small amounts of current leaking to ground. Common causes include water intrusion, damaged wiring, a failing appliance plugged into the circuit, or even a bad GFCI that’s tripping incorrectly. Ignoring repeated tripping can lead to frustration, but more importantly, it can leave other outlets on the same circuit without proper protection.

GFCI Outlet Installation

Signs of Professional GFCI Outlet Installation

This photo shows the attention to detail that goes into a professional GFCI outlet installation. You can see clean, organized wiring with proper sealing where the electrical cable passes through the wall and into the box. These small but important details are what separates a professional installation from a rushed one.

A properly installed GFCI includes tight, secure connections, the correct wire terminations, and is mounted perfectly flush in the box. A true professional also makes sure the outlet is wired according to code and the specific needs of the circuit, whether it’s protecting just itself or additional outlets downstream.
